I thought to myself, he should be thankful he is not living in Albuquerque. Don't get me wrong, Albuquerque is a great place but it is boring as hell. Compared to Portland, we have absolutely nothing going on here.

The Cold Weather Commute

Yesterday marked the coldest temperature at which I have ever biked in. It was 18 degrees outside at 6:30 in the morning. The night before I had been a little apprehensive but still confident that it would not be so bad. And it wasn't. I love riding in cold weather, it is quite invigorating as long as you are properly dressed.

I have been in cold climates before but had never ridden in extremely cold weather. In Portland, Oregon there had been a couple of times when we were hit with ice storms but on those days I had walked or driven to work. It was surprising to find out just how cold it can get here in Albuquerque.

The roads were a bit icy so I took it easy on the speed, riding to work at 14 mph but it only took an extra five minutes longer than normal. I wasn't alone, there were a couple of other hardcore cyclists that I passed along the way. It is still pretty chilly today so I may have another cold commute on the way home tonight but I am definitely looking forward to it.

The Pacific Northwest is known for its coffee, after all Starbucks started there but even when I lived in Portland I never drank as much coffee as I have been consuming down here in the Duke City. I'm freaking wired man. Coffee and cigarettes. It's almost midnight so I am just going to have one last double espresso before bed, just to take the edge off of my earlier caffeine consumption. Those god damned republicans.

In their ongoing mission to recreate the United States from a federal republic with ample freedoms into a fascist state, the Republican's are up in arms over recent video shot by CNN reporters travelling with U.S. troops in Iraq. Apparently the good folks at CNN did not have the common decency to censor themselves and furthermore had the audacity to release video showing an insurgent sniper attacking U.S. troops. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif. is of the opinion that the press in the United States should not report on any items or issues that are not pro-American or I guess that do not meet his definition of pro-American.

What kind of bullshit is that? When I watch, read or listen to the news I would like to think that I am going to get impartial reporting, not goverment propaganda. Unfortunately the Republicans think that in 21st century Amerika the flow of information should be restricted, altered and refined so that only their message is going out to the people.

The Army Says Be Nice

Correct me if I am wrong but how many of you picture the Axis powers from WWII, the Chinese and North Koreans from the Korean War or the North Vietnamese and Vietcong from the Vietnam War as having been smiling, cordial opponents? And the insurgents and terrorists in Iraq today, are they known for their hospitality and good manners?

Why then has the Army decided that it is in the best interest of our nation defense to switch to a policy of nice drill sergeants? Other than the fact that today's military is more about retaining bodies to fill the ranks rather than maintaining a military stocked with well disciplined troops who can be counted upon to fulfill the missions they are given.

Basic training used to be about weeding out those individuals who are not suited to military life and for good reason. When you are actually deployed in a hostile environment it is not about fighting for democracy or defending the flag or helping the oppressed. It is about looking out for the welfare of the man/woman next to you and knowing that he/she is doing the same for you. It is knowing that you volunteered for a life that is not guaranteed to be safe or comfortable. It is about sacrificing personal comforts and liberties to be a part of something larger than one's self.

Why then has the Army embarked upon a path of creating the illusion that the life of a soldier is about being an individual, an Army of one? Why are the remaking the Army into a place where someone can go to be treated nicely when the fact of the matter is combat is very ugly? Remember people, this is an all volunteer military and has been since the end of the Vietnam War. You choose to serve and regardless of whatever propaganda is dished out by recruiters, an individual needs to realize that a soldier's life is not supposed to be safe and comfortable. When you join the military you are agreeing to accept the fact that you are giving up the choice to do whatever you want.

Lowering standards in order to have a larger pool of potential recruits is one thing for I am certain that there are plenty of people who have made mistakes or test low on entrance exams who otherwise have the potential to be fine soldiers. But it is another thing entirely to paint the military as a pleasant and hospitable lifestyle when historically our military has and continues to be drawn into bloody conflicts.

Nice drill sergeants? Okay, but show me the nice wars these recruits will be sent to fight.

Duane "Dog" Chapman Arrested

So most of America has heard of the recent arrest of Duane "Dog" Chapman and how the Mexican government is demanding his extradition south of the border to face charges related to Dog's capture of convicted rapist Andrew Luster back in 2003.

All sorts of rumors and conspiracies are floating around as to the true nature of the Mexican's wanting Dog Chapman back. Some people, including Dog himself, are claiming that he is being traded to Mexico in return for persons wanted by the United States government. Others simply question why, after three years, do the Mexican's now want Dog Chapman back to face charges?

I'm certain that in time all of this will play out in the media. But I am curious about one thing.

Duane "Dog" Chapman makes his living and has become a celebrity on cable TV by bringing fugitives and bail jumpers to justice so why has nobody made an issue out of the fact that Duane Chapman did exactly what those he chases does. He fled from authorities when he was originally arrested in Mexico. Isn't anyone going to state the facts here? He was arrested by Mexican authorities for what they say were legitimate charges and rather than staying and answering to those charges and clearing his name, Dog chose to run.

So before everyone gets on the Free The Dog bandwagon, just remember the entire series of events that transpired in the first place.

People, I never say anything that I am not willing to repeat verbatim if it gets back to someone else. That being said, I learned this weekend that we have a chatty Kathy at work who loves to take what someone has said quite openly and run to other people and repeat those words but with her own little twist. Chatty Kathy is obviously well versed in the art of caring for, and feeding gossip.

The only problem was the gossip she was spreading was not gossip but rather a twisted version of a statement I had made to my subordinates regarding the possibility of working overtime. Even worse, the person she chose to spread this gossip to was in no position to be asked to work overtime. It went from being gossip to telling outright lies which a gifted gossiper should never have to do. Such is life. At least we have identified another weak link in the organization and can keep an eye on her.

The Blinding Light of Propaganda

The Associated Press ran a story today over on MSNBC stating that terror cases are being prosecuted at pre-9/11 levels. Very interesting considering that Mr. Bush continues to talk about the necessity to continue on with the war in Iraq and how we must continue to distance ourselves from the rest of the world as we pursue this seemingly fruitless war on terror.

Several key sycophants in the government chimed in to explain the reason why so few cases are being prosecuted but perhaps it was Meredith Fuchs, general counsel at the National Security Archive at George Washington University who said it best. She was quoted as saying, "The surge right after 9/11 makes sense, but the drop-off so quickly means either a lot of that post-9/11 activity was not necessary or that they haven't identified key people or that key people in custody aren't being prosecuted."

Very interesting. So we have three possible reasons for this:

1. The Bush administration moved quickly to stir the public into a state of panic and fear so that he could further his own personal agenda in Iraq and the middle east.

2. The Bush administration employs a lot of yes men and women who are inept and unable to gather the intelligence necessary to locate the key people involved in terror plots against the United States.

3. The Bush administration was so gung-ho to justify the war on terror that many of the key people may have been captured but due to the fact that they were tortured it would now be difficult to bring them to the United States to be prosecuted.

Folks, no matter how you slice it, that good old boy in the White House fucked up on so many different levels that now, we as a nation are all caught up in a giant cluster fuck. Let's start looking to the next century, this one needs to be written off as a giant loss.

This photo was taken on the bike path leading to the University of New Mexico, most likely the work of a dumb, bored kid. The ironic thing is that it is located about one hundred feet from the photo below.

This building appears to be some sort of incinerator and I am wondering if it had any influence on the graffiti photo at the top of this post. Seeing a swastika is a little odd here in Albuquerque seeing as though we have a pretty diverse population not unlike when I lived in Portland, Oregon which is very white.

Duke Lacrosse Scandal: Stick To The Facts (Part 2)

It appears the the alleged gang rape of a black stripper by three Duke University lacrosse players in April of this year is a sham that has been perpetrated by Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong in an attempt to drum up publicity for his political future. The investigation into this alleged crime has yet to turn up any credible evidence showing that the woman in question was ever raped.

There has been nothing but inconsistent statements by both of the strippers who were at the party, sloppy police work and an obvious attempt by the prosecution to play the race card in order to draw attention to this case. In the mean time, the three accused players have suffered irreparable damage to their reputations even though a person is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty.

As I have said before, if this had been a white stripper accusing three white men of rape this case would not have received the national, front page exposure that it has. Mike Nifong should be ashamed of himself and the citizens of Durham should be outraged by the highly questionable actions of this individual.

Coffee and the Comfy Chairs

Today the Viddy clan took a break from shopping at the Coronado Mall to enjoy the ambiance, fine coffee and of course, the comfy chairs at Satellite Coffee up on Louisiana Avenue. This location by far has the nicest staff of any of the local coffee joints I have visited since moving to Albuquerque. This is not to say that there are not other friendly baristas in the area, I am just saying that this place has the nicest staff of the places I have personally visited. The quad espresso was pretty damn good and so was the music.

But what has always fascinated me about the Satellite Coffee franchise is the comfy chairs. It is worth a visit just to sit down and relax in them. My god, it is just a simple thing but I can never say enough about their comfy chairs.

So whether you live here or just plan to visit, take my advice and visit a Satellite Coffee location here in the Duke City.

Summer Movie Agony

This summer it is all about endurance. Both Superman Returns and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest come in at about two and a half hours each. Both movies are fairly entertaining but the long run times do little to enhance each movie. It must be a form of welfare or subsidation handed out by Hollywood to the theater owners around the country. The longer each movie runs the more opportunity there is for theater owners to clean up at the snack counter.

Today's White Trash Moment

It's 7:30am this morning and I have just walked out of the Smith's store on Constitution and Carlisle in Albuquerque. I am standing at the bike rack at the main entrance when I hear the store alarm go off. And what do I see? Running out the door is this pudgy white dude in jeans and an old white t-shirt carrying several items, among them was two 40 oz. bottles of some sort of cheap malt liquor. (Old 8 perhaps?) He ran across the parking lot, tossed everything into the open window of the car to his passenger and sped off. Two store employees ran after him, and even though they did not catch this idiot they did get his complete license number off his car.

I'm thinking to myself, what kind of idiot is so desperate and stupid that he risks going to jail for a couple of bottles of cheap ass malt liquor? They have your face on the security tapes and they have your license number and vehicle description. Eventually APD is going to be calling on you and hopefully you'll do some time. Not just for stealing but for being such a stupid asshole.

I never personally witnessed such behavior when I was in Portland even though I heard about it quite a bit, and now I have seen it firsthand.

It's incredible what you can see this early in the morning. Hey dude, hope it was worth it.

I'll Buy That For A Dollar

So a deputy in Bremerton, Washington claims that he was trying to reach for his taser but instead drew his pistol and shot a man who was up a tree. The excuse was that the taser was similar in shape to the deputy's pistol. Let us also forget the fact that most law enforcement officers carry their pistols and tasers in different locations. The deputy is a five year veteran of the force but for some reason, I assume the stress of dealing with an unarmed man in a tree, he was unable to tell the difference between his lethal and less than lethal weapons.

Was Al Qaeda Going To Pass Gas On The Subway?

If you believe that Al Qaeda went through all the trouble to train, infiltrate the United States and acquire the cyanide gas just to call off the operation then you are about as smart as the current president. The latest story regarding an alleged plot in 2003 to launch an attack in the New York subway system is pure fantasy at best and smells of the type of propaganda that the current administration loves to leak out. It is about as likely a story as Al Qaeda planning an attack on the MAX in Portland or the Rapid Ride here in the Duke City.

"Bloody" Mary Winkler: The Mystery Continues

The rumor mill is running at full speed speculating as to what the motive was behind the brutal murder of Matthew Winkler at the hands of his wife, the now infamous "Bloody" Mary Winkler.

Many of "Bloody" Mary's supporters are trying to spin that she was being abused by Matthew Winkler but I submit to you that this is hard to believe, after all she was got far away from her home with her children. Which means that she was able to travel and therefore could have walked away from her husband instead of brutally slaying him. Police and prosecutors state that "Bloody" Mary has given them a statement with a motive but they are refusing to release this information.

I believe that in time we will learn that this was a love triangle and "Bloody" Mary killed her husband in order to be with another man. Whether or not this other man had anything to do with the killing I cannot say. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion and I could be wrong but I do not think I am.

We will just have to see what transpires during her trial, the truth will eventually be brought to light and then we will know the real story behind the butcher that is now known as "Bloody" Mary Winkler.

Yesterday was a perfect summer day. Mr. Viddy and the kids enjoyed a nice game of baseball at Isotopes Park. Yes, the Isotopes. The same ball club that was formerly located in Springfield on The Simpsons.

Isotopes Park is the second minor league ballpark I have been to and it is every bit as nice as PGE Park in Portland. However, the Albuquerque Isotopes are a little better than the Portland Beavers.

Even though our Isotopes lost to the Memphis Redbirds it was a close game and when it was all over we were treated to a fireworks show right at the ballpark.

America, isn't it great!

Acclimating

It's time to do or die, if you can't stand the heat get the fuck out of the kitchen. That's right, summer is upon me. My first summer in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The temperatures are beginning to creep up into the 90's which is quite a change from back in Oregon. Sure, it is a dry heat but after seven years of living in the Pacific Northwest it is taking some getting used to. Today I noticed on weather.com that there was a 20 degree difference in temperature between here and Beaverton.

I am not complaining though because in my new town I can bicycle nearly 365 days a year in decent weather, and I have been taking advantage of it. I bike to and from work every day which is something I could not do in Oregon. Don't get me wrong, the Portland metro area is beautiful and I just needed a change.

Tomorrow will be in the high 90's again. Perfect weather for a little crotch pot cooking.

If there is a hell, then Fred Phelps has more than earned himself a one way ticket straight to meet his mentor. Satan. Fred Phelps, here is a man who kills dogs, molests and abuses children and women and then has the audacity to drag his inbred congregation around the country to preach about the evils of homosexuality. Yes, this is THE Fred Phelps who likes to appear at the funerals of fallen soldiers to talk about how much God hates them and the United States.

Something tells me that God is not really wanting to partner up with someone like Fred Phelps. The Westboro Baptist Church. This is a real group of winners. Interestingly enough it is composed mainly of people related to Phelps through blood or marriage. Probably both. Rumor has it that Fred Phelps prefers the intimacy of close relatives, if you get my meaning. Did I say incest? That's up for you to decide.

It is very curious that Mr. Phelps is so unforgiving considering he has had a history of drug and alcohol abuse as well as a history of violence not only towards strangers but his own family members. An example of the pot calling the kettle black you say? Perhaps.

An easy explanation would be to say that Fred Phelps is just a fucking lunatic but that would not do him justice. This guy is the personification of evil, right down to masquerading as a man of God. And the icing on the cake is the fact that he bears a striking resemblance to the Tall Man from the Phantasm movies. Seriously.

Women vs. Men: Who Is Less Guilty?

A recent AP news article discussed the increasing rate at which some states are imprisoning women for crimes that they have committed. The original article can be read here---> Mountain states imprison...

There was a paragraph that stated, "The Women's Prison Association and like-minded groups focus attention on female inmates in part because they are more likely than men to be primary caretakers of children, and their incarceration can place severe strains on families." So, I am to assume that if I go out and get arrested for dealing meth and a female goes out and gets arrested for the exact same crime then I am more guilty and deserve a harsher sentence even though I am also a single parent and the primary means of support for my children?

Bullshit!

In my opinion gender should be taken out of the equation altogether. If a woman commits a crime, for whatever reason, she should face the exact same consequences regardless of whether or not she has children. Believe me, there are plenty of men who are criminals and also the primary means of support for a family and when they go before the judge nobody gives a damn. Off to prison he goes and no bleeding heart special interest group comes to his aid. I am not a misogynist but I believe that if you are going to make a case for lenience due to being a parent then apply it to both men and women.

Stop the sobbing about the poor women sitting in prison, kept away from their children and all the other bullshit. I love my children just as much as any woman loves their children so don't let me rot in prison just because I have a penis while the woman gets a lesser sentence or no jail time at all.

You don't know me, but I was the original Mrs. Tom Cruise way before all of this TomKat hysteria. I appeared in such blockbusters as "Gung Ho" and "Monkey Trouble" as well as the hit television shows "Hart to Hart" and "Paper Dolls". Am I bitter that my ex-husband has gone on to become the biggest movie star in the world? Not really. Does it hurt that after we divorced he went on to bed some of the hottest young starlets around? Certainly not. But it really bugs the hell out of me when the media grants that Aussie hag, Nicole Kidman, all of this free publicity allowing her to gush about how much she still loves Tom Cruise. What about me, Mimi Rogers? I was not lucky enough to go on to become an A-List celebrity like Tom and Nicole. If anyone needs the publicity it is me.

I have bills to pay and it would be nice if I could afford some of the extras, like cosmetic surgery. Don't forget, I am older than both Tom and Nicole and I could be Katie Holmes mother for god's sake! I'm not asking for much but it would be nice if every once in a while the press would drop a line or two mentioning the fact that I was the original Mrs. Tom Cruise.

So I took this photo just after leaving the Century 14 theater in downtown Albuquerque. I had taken my daughters to see Ice Age 2 and we had a great time until.

You see, as we left the theater I took the photo and noticed that two cops, I think from the Sheriff's office because they were not wearing APD uniforms, rolled up on an obviously drunken man. I could see that they were asking for i.d. because the drunk was waving his wallet around in the air.

Anyhow, we walked past that scene heading up Central Avenue to the bus stop. Just as we were crossing under the freeway I look behind and see the same drunken dude walking up on me and my daughters.

So I thought to myself, fuck this is going to get ugly. I made the mistake of stopping at the bus stop hoping the drunk would pass us by. Nope, he stopped and proceeded to engage me in some drunken banter. Luckily after about five minutes the bus came and my daughters and I got on and left the drunk sitting on the corner.

Thankfully the situation did not escalate into something more serious. But what the fuck is the deal with cops? They took the time to hassle this dude earlier but they couldn't see fit to get him off the street? Isn't public drunkenness illegal here in Albuquerque.

This shit leaves a real bad taste in my mouth towards the cops. What if this guy had attacked me or my daughters? Not ten minutes earlier the cops had him and they chose to ignore the situation. And there was no mistaking that this guy was drunk. He could barely talk, he stunk of alcohol and he was all wobbly.

Thanks to the two officers who were to busy or inept to haul this guy in. Even if he wasn't a danger to me he was in no condition to be walking the streets.

Oh well, this falls on deaf ears. I guess as long as Mayor Marty, the Sheriff and the Chief of Police are safe then the rest of us can just fend for ourselves.

Albuquerque Coffee Critique

I am a simple man with simple tastes. When it comes to caffeine my drinks of choice are Earl Grey tea by Stash and quad espressos.

I've been living in Albuquerque for just over a month now and have frequented five coffee slingers and will now give you a brief critique on each of them. Keep in mind, the only drink that I have ordered at each of these locations has been the quad espresso.

From best to worst:

Starbucks Coffee - 3400 Central Avenue SE This is a classic Starbucks, just like the type found back in Portland and Seattle. They make a mean quad espresso, the baristas have just the right amount of attitude and the outdoor patio makes for good people watching.
Satellite Coffee - 2300 Central Avenue SE Quite chic, a bit pretentious but the baristas here are very nice and the espressos are made just right. Nice outdoor patio but the location opens you up to be pestered by street people looking for money or just muttering to themselves.
Starbucks Coffee - Market Place at Journal Center To date this is the gayest Starbucks I have come across since leaving Portland but this location also makes an excellent quad espresso and after all, that is what really matters.
Satellite Coffee - 3513 Central Avenue NE The espressos here are merely adequate and the clientele are a bit full of themselves. The baristas tend to lack any personality. The big draw here is the comfy chairs in the back.
Starbucks Coffee - I-40 & San Mateo Located at The Pavillions at San Mateo, this Starbucks makes pure swill. This has been the most god awful coffee I have tasted in all of Albuquerque. Additionally, the interior is not the cleanest. The local gas stations are cleaner and have better coffee than this Starbucks. I won't be going back.

So there you have it, my opinion on the local coffee scene to date. No doubt that there are many other places that serve excellent coffee and as I discover them I will add them to my list.

"Crazy" Joe Arpaio On The Warpath, Again

Once again, Maricopa County Sheriff "Crazy" Joe Arpaio is out to grab some headlines. This time he is putting together a posse to hunt down and arrest any illegal immigrants foolish enough to wander into the Phoenix area. "Crazy" Joe is going to accomplish this feat thanks in part to the Maricopa County attorney who has chosen to interpret a law aimed at prosecuting people who smuggle illegal immigrants into this country. Once again we see the legal system being bastardized in order to suit the needs of one, attention hungry individual.

Any illegal caught by the posse will be prosecuted for conspiracy to smuggle themselves into the country. As if there is not enough real crime in Maricopa County now the sheriff wants to waste tax dollars and jail space rounding up people, who for the most part are not vicious criminals. I am not a supporter of illegal immigrants but I have to say that I am also not a supporter of prosecuting individuals just because the local sheriff is an attention whore.

And let us not forget one little detail. It is the federal government that is responsible for controlling illegal immigration. "Crazy" Joe, you crazy bastard, it appears that you have spent too much time out in the desert heat. Perhaps it is time for the citizens of Maricopa County to put you out to pasture.

Preparing For A Terrorist Attack

Lately I have been hearing these PSA's featuring various public officials talking about how every family should be prepared for a terrorist attack. Quite frankly, I am getting very annoyed by these messages. I am sorry folks but I refuse to buy into this culture of fear that the Bush administration has tried to propagate.

I will concede that there is always a possibility that there may one day be another attack on U.S. soil by terrorists but quite frankly I am betting that such an attack is slim at best. Do you want to know how I prepare for another terrorist attack? I live my life the same as I always have. By not buying into the paranoia I am dealing a crippling blow to any terrorist organization because I refuse to live in fear.

I am more worried of becoming the victim of a mugging or home invasion than I am of becoming the victim of a terrorist attack. I am also terrified of going to the gas station these days but you do not hear any PSA's addressing these issues. No, it is far easier to try and distract the public with these Chicken Little stories of the terrorist threat.

Scapegoat of the Week: Bill Tucker

It looks as if after weeks of voting and deliberations the powers that be have selected Bill Tucker to become the newest member of the Scapegoat Club.

You remember the tragedy, the Sago Mine disaster that left only one survivor and I am sure that you have watched and read about all of the confusion surrounding the initial hours after the mine collapsed. And then, the aftermath. The finger pointing as to who was responsible and rumors about safety gear that did not work. Yes, it was an ugly and tragic incident.

But have no fear because now we have someone to vent our emotions on, Bill Tucker, an assistant inspector at large for the state Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training who was coerced into stepping into the limelight to accept responsibility for causing so much of the confusion at the beginning of the Sago Mine collapse.

It would be interesting to find out whether or not he was forced to accept this responsibility or was he paid to offer himself up for sacrifice? I'm skeptical so I'd like to believe that his bosses forced him into this situation in order to take the heat of their backs.

Good luck Bill Tucker, let's hope that the media does not tear into you too severely. And in the end, Wal-Mart is always hiring.

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have Nob Hill

It was a beautiful morning here in Albuquerque so I decided to bike up to the post office and then over to the Starbuck's on Nob Hill to treat myself to my usual, a quad espresso. After that, I biked around the area and ran into a couple of interesting characters.

On the corner of Central and Carlisle I stopped to take some photos and at the light I hear this threatening voice say, "you'd better not be taking my picture." And there in an older, red Thunderbird was this grubby looking white trash dude giving me the evil eye. Sorry dude, you are not exactly what could be described as photogenic.

And not five minutes later as I am aiming my lens up the street to take some shots of the buildings comes strolling this guy straight out of a '70's B-movie. Big afro, big eyeglasses and he kind of looked like Donald Sutherland. Anyhow, he didn't say anything to me but again I got the stare like he thought I was going to take his picture as well.

Some people are just fucking nuts. The least of your worries is me taking your picture. In case you didn't realize it, there are video cameras all over the place, recording you whether you like it or not. The bank, the ATM machine, grocery stores, you name it. Another thing, try some common courtesy. For the most part, I try not to be intrusive when I am out doing my photography. If you think that I may get you in one of my shots, just ask and I will gladly recompose the shot to leave you out of it.

All in all it was a good morning and I thoroughly enjoyed my ride. Nob Hill is not unlike the Pearl District or Trendy-third in Portland and it is filled with a variety of people. Some nice and pleasant, some not so much. But you take the good with the bad.

So the illegals and their supporters are calling for May 1 to be a "Day Without Immigrants." Listen up, it won't have the devastating effect that you are hoping for. This is America, we overcome adversity. Historically, we always rise to the occasion. So if you are trying to force the issue on immigration, you have already lost.

Think about it. Those of you who have come here from elsewhere are already showing your true colors. You care so little about your own homes that rather than stay and try to improve your home countries you come to America. You run the same tired propaganda about how you do the work that no American will do. Well, instead of just one day of no immigrants let's try a year, or longer. Go back to your native countries and we can all see whether or not America falls apart without you.

I've decided not to assist in making the oil executives any richer. My new mode of transportation is this sweet, 2006 Gary Fisher Opie. So far it rides very nice and will get the job done until I can find a road bike that I like.

Luckily, Albuquerque is pretty bike friendly like back in Portland so riding here is very enjoyable and it can be done year around.

I know that a lot of you will continue to find excuses as to why you must drive your cars, trucks and SUV's so you have fun burning money at the pumps.

Down For The Count: Two Albuquerque Police Officers To Be Charged

Last October there was an incident in which New Mexico State Police and Albuquerque Police officers exchanged blows in a street fight. Both departments have issued findings that place the blame on the incident on each other. In Santa Fe, the district attorney Henry Valdez has charged two APD officers with verbal assault, battery and disorderly conduct.

New Mexico is not the first or the last place where something like this will occur but whenever I see a story like this I have to ask myself, shouldn't people who are responsible for enforcing the law know better? I've heard the argument that law enforcement officers are only human like the rest of us and I agree that anyone can make a mistake but when it comes to something like brawling I must say that there is no excuse. All of the people involved should have known better and it does not matter whether the State Police or the Albuquerque Police started it.

Had this happened to me and another group of civilians everyone involved would probably be facing charges, so it is quite unfair to charge just the two APD officers, bring the other individuals up on charges as well. Somebody should have had the common sense to walk away from the confrontation before it escalated, plain and simple.

Behavior like this tarnishes the reputation and good work of law enforcement all over the country. I like to believe that the majority of the men and women who patrol our streets and keep us safe are mature and ethical enough to know better than to engage in unlawful behavior.

"Bloody" Mary Winkler Case Still A Mystery

Since her March arrest for the murder of her husband, the minister Matthew Winkler, not much has been heard regarding the motive that drove "Bloody" Mary Winkler to commit this heinous crime. Law enforcement has been mum on discussing a motive and there have been two separate reports which can be read here: Winkler might use mental state... and here: Winkler shooting may have been accident...

The case has been turned over to the grand jury which isn't scheduled to meet again until June which will give the defense team ample time to concoct an excuse for their defendant. Obviously we can tell by the above articles that "Bloody" Mary is either going to be portrayed as a helpless victim of mental illness who can't be held responsible for this crime or we are going to be duped into believing that somehow she came to be in possession of a firearm that just accidentally discharged and killed her husband.

Both scenarios are pretty far fetched in my opinion but I must concede that either situation is within the realm of possibility if not probability. The fact that nobody wants to discuss a possible motive leads me to believe that "Bloody" Mary Winkler was in full possession of her faculties and this was a premeditated crime. Time will tell.

The Horrific Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Faux Pas

Ben & Jerry, those rascals of the ice cream world have gone and done it again. Apparently they did not research the far reaching social and political implications prior to naming their newest flavor, "Black & Tan." Even though this flavor is only available in the United States it has offended people in Ireland due to it being the nickname of a violent British militia that operated during Ireland's war of independence at the beginning of the 20th century.

Ben & Jerry's was forced to issue an apology for offending those poor Irish bastards who are still traumatized by any mention of the Black and Tan militia. To put this in the proper perspective, "Black and Tan" is also the name of a popular ale and stout drink and it was the drink that Ben & Jerry were referencing and not the former British militia. If one were to take the time to just look at the ice cream itself you would see how it bears a resemblance to the drink. And remember, this is a flavor that would only be available in the United States. Also, do a web search for "Black and Tan" and you will find far more results that refer to the drink rather than the militia.

Had I been in charge of public relations for Ben & Jerry's I would not have apologized for a situation which developed in the mind of some people who chose to read something into an innocent flavor of ice cream.

Mr. Bush Turns A Blind Eye To The South

President Bush has stated on many occasions that he is interested both in our national security and domestic prosperity yet he continues to ignore our southern border. I do not even want to touch upon issues of illegal immigration because nothing will ever stem the flow of it until our government decides to deal with the Mexican leadership.

It is my fervent belief that most of the individuals and families that pour across our southern border each year truly are looking for a better life and the opportunity to provide for their loved ones. And yes, among the harmless immigrants you are going to find some less savory characters but I do not believe that they are among the majority.

Building a wall, stationing armed troops along the border, massive immigration sweeps and amnesty programs are all lessons in futility. Some of the ideas like building walls are not realistic and even if the majority of illegal immigrants were to be caught and deported, there are millions of others still waiting to cross over and take their place. And who can blame them. They live in a country that is inept at best and has a history of being led by corrupt leaders at all level of government. It is a country without a future or rather it is a country whose people only see a future here in America.

Rather than spending billions of dollars in far off lands for military and political actions that will never benefit us as a nation, when will Washington wake up and realize that it would be in the best interests of the North American continent to focus on Mexico and Latin America. And I mean a genuine focus on developing the infrastructures of the nations south of us. We should be investing our energy into helping develop Mexico and the rest of Latin America into modern economies that can provide education, jobs, healthcare and other tangible benefits so that their citizens would have a reason to stay put and in doing so it would eventually stem the flow of illegal immigrants.

The other benefit to really trying to reach out to our neighbors to the south would be increased security for the entire North American continent. When you get past the language barrier and look at the people of Mexico and Latin America we are all remarkably alike. We share similar religious and moral beliefs, our views on family are about the same and many other traits are all very much the same. Unlike the middle east where we will never truly be able to integrate with that culture.

I'm sure not everyone will agree with me on this subject but mark my words, until we begin to take a serious interest in developing Mexico and Latin America we will never see a decrease in illegal immigration.

Duke Lacrosse Case To Move Forward?

At least one of the attorneys for the defense of a Duke Lacrosse player is stating that he will not be considering any type of plea agreement and that he will either wait for the D.A. to dismiss charges or take the case to trial.  Is this a bold gamble or does the attorney in question truly believe that his client is innocent of the rape allegations?

Another interesting fact is that the D.A. assigned to the case, Mike Nifong has stated that he will be making no comments outside of the courtroom.  Again, is this indicative of the D.A.'s confidence in being able to win a conviction or is he laying low just in case evidence shows that no crime was committed?

It will be another interesting and entertaining media circus and hopefully in the end justice will be served.  Regardless of the outcome.  I have not seen enough evidence on either side to justify an opinion at this point in time other to say that anything is possible at the moment.

Duke City or Death City?

Three homicides in two days, what the hell is this all about Albuquerque? And the motivation for one of the killings was the exchange of threatening looks between the victim and his killers. Meaningless violence, plain and simple. The suspects if found guilty should be taken out in the desert and buried alive. Normally I am not a person who advocates violence but once a person decides to stop acting like a decent human being then I see no need to make any gestures of civility towards them.

What frightens me the most whenever I hear about a random killing is the fact that it can happen to anyone at any time. It is not quite the same as a retaliation killing or revenge where at least the suspect and victim were somehow connected. And in the case of the one victim who was killed over an exchange of glances, how many of us have inadvertently given a stranger a dirty look? I know that I have and it is obviously enough to cause some people to kill over.

I suppose the shock of these recent killings will wear off shortly and I am definitely going to continue to make the best of life here in Albuquerque but I will most certainly make myself more aware of my surroundings and live with the fact that there are some seriously disturbed people in the world.

Duke Lacrosse Scandal: Stick To The Facts

The Duke Lacrosse team is headlining across the country as the stars of the latest scandal of the week. Was a crime committed? Depending on who you ask the answer will vary from person to person. I do not think that the media or the public are in full possession of all the facts and all that is really known at the moment is that a black stripper has accused several members of the team of raping her.

One thing is crystal clear. The race card is going to be played to the fullest in this scandal. Instead of this simply being a search for the truth, was a young woman raped, it will once again turn into a white victimizing a black thing. Once again America will fail to look at this possible crime for what it is, an act of violence, and instead sides will be chosen based on race and regardless of the verdict no justice will have been served. Instead we will use this as an excuse to remain a divided nation. And you had better believe that both the white camp and the black camp will be equally as guilty for doing so.

Why can't we just look at this as we should. It is alleged that a single mother of two who is a student but also making ends meet as a stripper was raped by several members of the Duke Lacrosse team. If the allegations are true then the perpetrators should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Rape is a violent and heinous crime and it leaves the victim traumatized long after the act is committed. And I would venture to guess that this trauma is just as severe regardless of your skin color. There is no excuse for rape, it does not matter if you are a stripper or if you work at Wal-Mart. Accordingly, it should not matter if the perpetrators are privileged white students or unemployed street thugs of color. If guilty, the punishment should be severe.

By pointing fingers and stirring racial hatred no justice is served and it won't undo what was done to the young lady. Rape occurs to women of all races and color, so please stop publishing headlines talking about how this crime has opened up old wounds for black women. This is not about race, it is about finding out if this crime did occur and if so, punishing the offenders. Plain and simple.

Derrick Foxworth: Victim or Menacing Black Devil?

Portland finds itself in the midst of yet another juicy scandal as the citizens are exposed to the sexual stylings of Chief Derrick Foxworth. But as it has been pointed out in several media outlets, is Chief Foxworth really the bad guy here? Rumor has it that the alleged victim, Angela Oswalt, was quite the slut-about-town who made a habit of bragging about the various high profile men that she had banged.

I'm not saying that Derrick Foxworth is a saint but before condemning the man and sending him riding out of town on a rail shouldn't the city and the people first look to see how he has performed as the chief of police? This is not exactly a case of Chief Foxworth slipping his big, chocolate log into an underage girl like that filthy bastard, Neil Goldschmidt did. Of course the morality behind this must be considered but we must also look at the complete picture.

Should the Chief had known better? Yes. Were his actions questionable? Yes. Is Angela Oswalt a victim of sexual harassment? Probably not.

Let me spell it out in simple terms. You have a 46 year-old female with a history of seeking out important and powerful men for sexual relationships. She makes it a point to make those around her aware of these relationships. Up until now, she never had an issue with these men or her lifestyle. Bottom line, the lady is worn out. She has a lot of miles on her and her best years are behind her. No decent man will want to begin a serious relationship with a former slut and she is scared of a future that finds her alone with nothing but her cats to keep her company.

Ladies and gentlemen, Angela Oswalt is making one last, desperate attempt to be in the spotlight and perhaps make a little money for her retirement. Cat food and cat litter can get expensive.

"Dirty" Debra Lafave Was Simply Having A Manic Monday

Former middle school teacher and child rapist "Dirty" Debra Lafave has lived the American dream. She committed a heinous crime by engaging in sex with her underage student and all but beat the rap suffering just some house arrest time and probation and according to "Dirty" Debbie her actions were a result of bipolar disorder so she cannot be held entirely responsible for the crime.

She was probably a victim of The Bangles and their mind altering song "Manic Monday." Will "Dirty" Debbie pursue a civil action against the band? Is it possible that The Bangles somehow influenced Ms. Lafave, turning her from well meaning, caring teacher into an infamous slut? Or is this simply another case of a depraved individual who acted with a clear mind and deviant agenda?

Only time will tell.

The Conservative Definition of Good Citizenship

In recent weeks I have found myself discussing current affairs and politics with people of the conservative persuasion and I have taken note of an interesting pattern of thinking that they possess.

It seems that to a conservative a good American citizen is one who blindly follows the leadership and does not upset the status quo. Apparently it is a seditious act to exercise one's right to freedom of expression and downright treasonous to question authority.

I say this because on various occasions I have had the audacity to speak my mind on such issues as the war on terror, immigration and the abuse of power by law enforcement. Mind you, I am not one who would ever support the overthrow of the government nor would I advocate violence as a means to get my point across but as an American I feel that I have every right to question the government and our leadership when I feel that something is not being done in the best interest of our country.

Just the other day while enjoying a nice cup of coffee at a local coffee house I entered into a discussion regarding the burning of the American flag during protests. The conservative I was speaking with felt that these people should be beaten and jailed and to hell with the fact that people are allowed to burn the flag. I tried to explain that I agreed that burning our flag was a despicable act but until a law is passed to ban such activity then we must accept that some people choose to partake in this activity.

And when I voiced my displeasure over wiretapping and the Gitmo fiasco the conservative turned on me and told me that if I cared about my country then I would just accept that these things are to be a part of the sacrifice citizens must make in this day and age. He went on to say that if I was against keeping America safe then perhaps I should find another place to live.

Excuse me, but I am not quite ready to voluntarily relinquish my freedoms just yet and especially when it has been almost 5 years since 9/11 and I have yet to see and credible evidence that another attack is imminent. People, given a long enough timeline I am quite certain we will be attacked again but I seriously doubt we will see it any time soon. In the meantime, Bush and Cheney keep playing to peoples fears and use this as an excuse to abuse their power more and more. Word to your mother.

Conservatives want blind ignorance to be the key trait of good citizenship. Sorry, I can't do it.

The Sorry State of the American Education System

Once again I have found myself to be utterly disgusted with the education system in this country. It begins with the utter contempt that I hold towards those who have voluntarily chosen to work in this field, whether in administration or teaching positions.

Let me explain. Both in Oregon and now Albuquerque I have found myself sitting across the desk from individuals who do not want to invest even the smallest bit of time and effort in assisting a student who is not academically gifted. My son is not stupid nor is he a discipline problem but he does struggle in school and as a result of being exposed to apathetic staff and educators during his first two years of high school he is now in a position where he is failing his classes.

In Oregon the standard response from the schools was to place the burden and the blame upon my son and myself, making us the one's completely responsible for the situation. Granted, I am all about taking personal responsibility when it is called for but as a parent I expect some effort from the public school system when it comes to educating my child. But instead you are faced with dealing with people who only have time for the "gifted" students. If a student is struggling it becomes a game of hot potato trying to pass off the kid to someone else.

Today at Albuquerque High School I found myself in the same situation as in Oregon. When the counselor saw my son's transcripts and his poor grades he did not even offer me a seat in his office. The first thing he did was show us the door, literally. Well, he did give me a printout of charter schools in the area who work with at-risk kids but he couldn't even spare the time to assist me in deciding what school to seek out.

Bottom line, if you choose to work with children in the public schools you better damn well be willing to help all the kids, not just the gifted ones who don't take a lot of effort. You people disgust me.

Bike Albuquerque: The Bad

Today ended Mr. Viddy's first week as a new resident of Albuquerque and for the most part everyone I have met has been very kind and friendly. Until this afternoon.

It was my great displeasure to have found myself wandering into the Bike Coop located on Central Avenue. In Portland and Beaverton the bike shops were not always the most accommodating places but in general they acknowledged your presence when you walked through the door. But not at the Bike Coop.

This afternoon I stopped in because I needed a new seatpost for my mountain bike, not a big ticket item I realize but still there were only me and one other customer in the shop. The dude with the foreign accent was a total asshole who failed to give me the time of day while I waited to ask about the seatpost. For all he knew I may have been there to purchase a new road bike, which I will be getting soon but for whatever reason I was invisible to him. The terrible service I received today will ensure that I will never again be visiting the Bike Coop.

I'll travel down the road to Bike World, near the UNM campus. Bike World was attentive and helpful even though I was only buying a $15.00 seatpost. Bike Coop, a terrible place to shop in my humble opinion.

Riding The Frodo Train

Before Frodo, what career defining roles did Elijah Wood ever produce? I think he may have supported Macauley Caulkin in one movie but that was about it. Elijah Wood is another C-List celebrity who is coming mighty close to wearing out his 15 minutes of fame.

The dude is now stumping for Intel and if you have seen the recent commercial you can tell that he is probably on the edge of imploding. The guy is heading down the same career path as fellow tiny actor, Gary Coleman. Mark my words, in about 5 more years you'll hear about how Elijah Wood is now working as mall security.

Talent wise he is very shallow. How many fantasy character roles can he hope to secure? Frodo will have been his defining moment and I hope that he has invested his earnings well because he will be needing them soon.

If you are a fan of Elijah Wood, go fuck yourself.

Albuquerque: Day One

The morning began just fine in Grand Junction, Colorado. Mr. Viddy and family awoke bright and early to begin our final leg into New Mexico. I should have known something would be amiss when we began the climb up Red Mountain Pass just outside of Ouray, Colorado. Apparently they had been doing some blasting to prevent avalanches and as a result we found ourselves stopped dead in our tracks along with about a dozen other cars and trucks just past the top of the mountain. We waited on the road for about an hour while they cleared a path on the roadway for traffic.

Finally, we entered the Duke City at about 8 o'clock this evening and we settled into our hotel for the night. All was going smooth until Mr. Viddy's son asked to go and get some items out of the truck. When he returned to the room and I asked for the keys back, you guessed it. He locked the keys in the truck. Right there, in plain view on the drivers side seat were my only set of keys for the truck.

Being a crafty devil, I attempted to learn how to pop a car door lock on the internet but I just couldn't get it done. So I finally broke down and called a locksmith. I just got back with keys in hand and $52 poorer but it beats the hell out of putting a brick through the window.

And that was Albuquerque, Day One.

Viddy On The Road: American Style

10 hours to go until I hit the road and a mere 18 hours before I cross the state line out of Oregon for good. Yes, the day is almost upon us when Mr. Viddy relocates his base of operations to the Southwest. Folks, I'm being sincere when I say that I've loved spending time with you up here in Oregon but it's time to embark on my next great adventure. No worries, I am sure I will visit from time to time but I'd be lying if I told you that I wasn't looking forward to sunnier surroundings.

If you happen to see me along the way give a honk and a wave, I probably won't acknowledge you and I'll most definitely speed up to get away but fuck it, it is the thought that counts.

Sure there are some things that I won't miss. Like the Blazers and the homeless kids on Pioneer Square but that is a sacrifice that I am willing to make. Alrighty then, I am tired. Stay tuned for my reports from the road as I traverse this great nation of ours.

Regarding Downtown Albuquerque: A Thought For The Future

It would appear that there is at least some interest in developing downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico into a bustling hub of activity. A true urban center where people could live, work and play all in one central area. Beyond housing, jobs and entertainment there is one key element which will continue to remain elusive to the downtown core in Albuquerque. Density. Yes, it takes warm bodies to grow and develop any area and downtown Albuquerque is no different. Now let me tell you why I believe that the city and the developers will fail to create a long-term and vibrant downtown neighborhood. Greed.

Greed and density go together about as well as oil and water. It never fails to amaze me when I read about cities trying to build up certain neighborhoods and then complain when they cannot attract a permanent base of residents to sustain their endeavors. Take Albuquerque. What you need in order to succeed is a mix of people of various income levels and backgrounds who are attracted to the idea of living together in a high energy environment but what you will see instead is the greedy developer who will roll in, gentrify the neighborhood and then proceed to build high priced lofts, condos and apartments.

I am sorry, but you cannot hope to populate the entire downtown area with nothing but affluent people. You need affordable housing so that you can also get the worker bee's and artists and other people who would bring life and add color to the downtown area. But you are not going to see this happen, instead the developers will try to squeeze as much money per square foot as they can and in a short time you will here them and the politicians whine about how they failed to create the density needed to support a revitalized downtown neighborhood.

Perhaps I have oversimplified my explanations but not by much. I think you will see that until the time comes when everyone involved in the development process begins to factor in lower wage earners as being a key element in this equation you can forget about seeing a downtown Albuquerque that is truly alive and vibrant.

The Church of Christ And How It Relates To The Matthew Winkler Slaying

In my previous post regarding the motivations of "Bloody" Mary Winkler who savagely gunned down her husband Matthew who was a minister with the Church of Christ I received several responses from people who are members of the Church. To set the record straight, I do not personally believe that the Church of Christ in any way influenced Mary Winkler. Meaning this, I do not think Church members directly influenced her actions and by no means do I believe that they condoned such a vile act.

This was obviously the case of an unstable woman who just happened to me a member of a religious organization I do not want my readers to think that I am drawing a connection between the two. I must confess that I do not have much knowledge of the Church of Christ but I have not seen anything that would lead me to believe that this is a cult-like organization that would sanction a murder of one of it's members.

Time will tell what motivated "Bloody" Mary Winkler to commit murder. At this junction in time however, it is too early to speculate if she did indeed have a justification. I am looking forward to the court proceedings to see how each side spins this crime.

"Bloody" Mary Winkler: Minister's Wife Gone Bad

There is a lot of speculation going around as to what motivated 32 year-old Mary Winkler to gun down her husband, minister Matthew Winkler in their Tennessee home on Wednesday. Police are keeping mum even though we have heard reports that "Bloody" Mary has given a full confession.

Friends and family have all described the couple and their children as being very happy together and everyone was shocked by the brutal killing, more so because it appears that the children were at home when their father was killed. No motive has been ruled out even though police have said that it does not appear to be a case of infidelity. Perhaps it was some form of abuse that nobody was aware of? At first I thought it was odd that no word of Mary's confession has leaked but then I realized that this being a conservative Southern community, they would do their best to keep a tight lid on news or gossip.

So what would cause a wife to murder her husband when everyone around them saw the couple as idyllic? Even though infidelity is being ruled out I believe that it was a possibility that Mary, acting under the influence of a possible lover, killed her husband in order to escape the seemingly perfect world that she was trapped in. And the other strong possibility may end up being some form of sexual abuse that was being perpetrated by the minister husband.

For now we must wait for this case to make it's way through the legal system before we truly find out what compelled "Bloody" Mary Winkler to kill, in cold blood.

Islam Once Again Proves It Is NOT A Religion of Love and Peace

Another glaring case in point which shows just what is wrong with Islam and the fanatical Muslims who follow it. President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan is grappling with how to free Abdul Rahman who is facing death because of the heinous crime of converting to Christianity and carrying a bible. You would think that any sane and rational man, especially the leader of his nation, would not need to grapple with anything. Step up, make a stand for what is right and free the man.

And where is George Bush in all of this? Mr. Freedom should have already given an ultimatum to Hamid Karzai telling, not asking him, to free Abdul Rahman. What is the point of sacrificing the lives of American servicepeople around the world if we are just going to stand by a let an innocent man die for the crime of changing his religious beliefs?

We shall have to see how this plays out but even if Abdul Rahman is freed it will still be a travesty of justice if the leadership of Afghanistan has to resort to making excuses such as he is mentally ill. Just let the man go. You sick, disgusting Muslim bastards.

The Long Arm of MADD and Drunken Texans and the Evil That Men Do, But Women Can Drink As Much As Some Men

Now it makes sense. What am I talking about you ask? I am talking about the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission sending undercover hooch cops into bars to arrest and fine people caught drunk in public, even if they have not left the building. I was pondering why Texas would begin such an operation and then I read that this has the backing and full support of MADD. Grieving mothers, I can sympathize with them. They have lost children to drunks but I cannot agree with sending undercover operatives into public establishments and then arresting people who they feel have had too much to drink.

I'd support DUI checkpoints, I'd even support positioning officers outside of drinking establishments to check on people leaving a bar to see if they are too inebriated to function but it chaps my hide that they are doing this undercover, on the down low and they have not mentioned what the criteria is for determining how drunk is too drunk. Are they going to do spot breathalyzer tests or will it be discretionary based on how the officers feels?

Texas, rethink this fiasco and come back to me when you have a better system in place.

Los Angeles Dumping The Poor

Los Angeles. In the area known as Skid Row surveillance cameras captured the images of an elderly lady, dressed in slippers and a hospital gown wandering around aimlessly until the staff of the Union Rescue Mission were seen bringing her inside. The woman, 63 year-old Carol Ann Reyes of Gardena had been removed from a Kaiser Permanente hospital, put in a taxi and then dumped onto the streets of downtown Los Angeles like unwanted garbage.

Apparently this is not an isolated incident and city officials are now investigating the practice of hospitals and perhaps even law enforcement agencies of dumping the poor and homeless downtown. In a bit of damage control a spokesperson for Kaiser Permanente is claiming that after being unable to find shelter for Ms. Reyes that they had planned on transporting her to the Union Rescue Mission and are uncertain as to why she was just dumped on the street.

The reason is simple. In America if you are poor, unattractive or a minority then the government and big business see you as expendable. Human garbage. Kaiser Permanente may or may not be telling the truth about what happened to Ms. Reyes but one thing is certain, no insurance equals no room in the inn. They dumped this lady because to keep her in the hospital would have meant cutting into the profits and they couldn't have that. It was far better for the board of directors and the investors to just take a chance and put this human with little value into a taxi and dump her someplace like Skid Row. Make her someone elses problem.

I don't have all of the answers and I most definitely cannot spell out a workable fix for the poor and homeless in this country but it is time for all of us, myself included, to take a good look around and see just how cold and detatched we have become as a society. If it doesn't impact us directly then we do not care. It is one of the reasons why you continue to see stories like this in the media. Unless someone takes the time to slap a headline on a story, we could have cared less what became of Carol Ann Reyes. Even the politicians and city officials in Los Angeles have admitted that this is an ongoing problem but until the AP ran this story---> (L.A. Investigating Alleged Patient Dumping) nobody was willing to launch an investigation.

Interesting. It appears that if you are an attractive female then the judge and the victim's family find it easy to overlook your crime and are more than willing to let you slide with a slap on the wrist. But if you are coyote ugly and you commit a similar crime then you get to visit your local state prison as a guest for several years.

If Debra Lafave looked anything like Mishelle Robinson you can believe that she would not have walked out of the courtroom with just house arrest, she too would have been headed to the pokey. It's a good thing that in America, good looks come in handy and if you aren't attractive perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to save up for some cosmetic surgery. Just in case.

Cyberslacking Is Not Unproductive

Some reports like to quote that employees who use the internet at work for leisure purposes contribute to an estimated $1 billion in lost productivity. My response to this. BULLSHIT!

During a typical 8 hour shift at work I estimate that I spend about 5 hours surfing the internet, blogging, shopping and other non-work related internet functions yet I consistently meet my goals and deadlines and have never had a bad performance review or faced disciplinary action due to my personal internet use on the company dime.

As a matter of fact, I feel that I would be less productive and more disgruntled if my employer ever dared to restrict my internet usage. Of course I would never view porn at work but beyond that, anything goes. So how can my cyberslacking be said to impede my performance at work? There are several people on my team who don't surf half as much as I do and they are far less productive. So I have to disagree that using the internet while at work contributes to a lack of productivity.

Poor leadership is the cause of this. Instead of scapegoating cyberspace, employers should take a long, hard look at their supervisors and managers and make sure that they are doing there jobs instead of wasting time and money on their long lunches and off-site meetings. Stop blaming the workers, we are here doing our best to increase profits. Let us have our fun and stay off our backs!

Debra Lefave: Too Hot For Hard Time

Convicted rapist, Debra Lafave, the 25 year-old school marm from Florida has finally escaped any possibility of jail time. This is due to the fact that the psychiatrists who were responsible for interviewing the teenaged victim had stated that making the young man testify at a trial would impede his recovery and cause untold trauma to his young psyche.

I know that many people have expressed outrage and have commented upon what they perceive to be a double standard in this case because instead of an older man molesting a young girl we have a hot and horny blonde who seduced a young male. Now I have not personally researched the statistics but shortly after the first trial when Ms. Lafave was given her slap on the wrist and no jail time, many news outlets had mentioned that there was not a double standard and in fact plenty of male rapists had been given similar sentences to Ms. Lafave's.

Personally, I too feel that this is a case of double standards and if anything I have read in plenty of rape cases where the female victim is encouraged to testify against her assailant and no psychiatrist stands up to say she should not. And in fact it has been mentioned in the Lafave case that the primary reason for the young man not testifying was merely to avoid embarrassment.

I can certainly understand the boy feeling awkward and not wanting his friends or schoolmates to poke fun at him but in not testifying against this disturbed woman he and his family have basically told her that it wasn't a big deal. Was it or wasn't it? This has to be a double standard and a complete slap in the face to the justice system because I honestly believe that if this had been a 25 year-old David Lafave, male teacher, who had seduced a teenage student that he would have been looking at some serious prison time and nobody would be arguing whether or not it was the appropriate sentence. Tap, tap?

Star Jones: Almost Dead

Star Jones suffered some major setbacks recently when she went in for breast lift surgery and found herself on the verge of death. Forgive me for my lack of sympathy but that vain bitch had it coming. She has let her C-List celebrity status go to her head. My god, all that she has ever done in life is get a spot on The View along with four other miserable bitches. It is not like she has ever made a serious effort to contribute something worthwhile to society. Unless you count that huge fiasco she called a wedding.

Before she hit it big she was just another tubby dame looking to get by in the world and then one day ABC comes a calling and now she thinks that she is the cat's meow. The bee's knees even. Along with this recently failed breast lift she has also undergone elective surgery to drop some of the fat she had accumulated prior to becoming a TV personality.

Folks, this just goes to show you what happens when you give too much attention to an individual who is not well grounded. Star Jones would rather die than be comfortable with who she is. What a pity said the kitty.

Not Again. Yes, The Matrix Rant!

Let's overlook my long standing opinion that the Wachowski Brothers borrowed heavily from E.M. Forster's 1909 short story, The Machine Stops when they crafted The Matrix. Today I am taking issue with a scene in The Matrix where Agent Smith is explaining to Neo how the Matrix came to be. I know you remember this scene, it where Smith tells Neo that the original construct of the Matrix was modeled after a utopian world but the humans kept rejecting the program because of their inherently violent nature. As a result, the Matrix was modeled after society of the late 20th century.

The first thing I have to question about this scene is the fact that in the movie, humans are grown and plugged into the Matrix directly after birth. They have no memories of anything prior to becoming fleshy D Cells so why would they care whether or not their artificial reality is utopian or violent when they have nothing to compare it to?

And my major point of contention is this. Even if the humans needed a more violent setting in which to exist why did the machines choose a more technologically advanced setting such as the late 20th Century where they would be exposed to computers, advanced weapons and other technology. Wouldn't it have made more sense for the machines to craft an artificial reality set back in a pre-industrial setting? That way even if Morpheus and his band of merry hackers went around unplugging humans from the Matrix, these people would have no concept of what was or what had happened in the real world.

It would be far more difficult to convince a human who had thought he was living in the 12th century for example to rise up against the machines. They'd have no concept of this kind of technology and it would be much more difficult for Morpheus and the others to train these people to plug back into the Matrix to fight against the machines.

So now you know.

In Portland, They Protest

It is your right to gather in public and protest against the government and it's policies but come on, we all know that the majority of people who attend any of Portland's protests are just posing phonies with too much free time on their hands. A rather large collection of apathetic losers carrying signs and chanting and not one of them could explain, in a coherent fashion, just what it is they are protesting against.

Someone told them about a protest and a rather dim light went off inside that dusty little head of theirs and they thought, "wow, cool." Even worse than the vapid protesters are the seedy little punks who join in with the protesters and look for ways to cause mayhem and vandalism.

There you have it. I am not nor would I ever attempt to prevent anyone from gathering in public but I do have my opinion based on what I have seen in the past. Anderson Cooper Is Entitled To Privacy

There was a recent snippet in the news just recently concerning CNN correspondent Anderson Cooper and the fact or rumor that he is gay. Jokingly referred to as the most openly closeted gay man in America. This issue is one of the many things that is so very wrong with American culture today. Whether it is Anderson Cooper or Joe the cable guy, what does it matter if someone is gay, lesbian, straight or Republican?

We are talking about a trait that for the most part only matters behind closed doors and I am pretty sick of all the violence and hysteria that can be stirred up over sexual orientation. Personally, in the case of Anderson Cooper, I like his reporting style and that is all that matters to me. It would be the same as having a mechanic who does excellent work, why do I care if he nails men or women?

Wake up America, there are real issues in the world today. Those of you who are openly or secretly homophobic should take those energies and focus on issues that need to be addressed. Don't be a sick bastard who fantasizes about other peoples sexual activity.

PETA To Assist With Aerial Tram Project

Sometimes you have to admit defeat and turn the reigns over to someone better able to handle a crisis situation. Now is the time Portland, call in PETA.

When will it end? When will someone with some authority in the matter take the white elephant a.k.a. OHSU Aerial Tram Project and put it out of it's misery? This project is headed down a one way road to failure and there is no turning back but hopefully the Mayor will be able to shoot out the tires and nip this thing in the bud before the city sees it's resources and coffers drained.

The tram was a nice idea but the fact of the matter is that no one seems to have a clue as to how to get this project completed in a reasonable manner. Throwing tens of millions of dollars into this money pit is ridiculous. Maybe they should mothball the tram project until some point in the future when steel prices have dropped and there is an infrastructure in place that can work together to see this project through to completion.

Until then, the white elephant should be put down. It is the only humane thing to do, both for it and the people of Portland. Someone call PETA, elephant abuse!

You Know You're Getting Old When...

You know your getting old when you get an email from an old Army buddy and you realize that you served together 20 years ago. Ouch, I'm not even 40 yet but I have adult memories from 20 years ago. Damn, time flies.

I have three groups of Army buddies. The first group is the three guys who went through infantry, airborne and ranger training with me and then we served together with the 1st Ranger Battalion, they are my best friends from the Army. The second group consists of a few buddies whom I met as a Ranger and after we finished our tours of duty there we all ended up in Hawaii with the 25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning). And the final group are the guys I served with in the Golden Dragons, 1/14th Infantry Battalion.

The email I got tonight was from a guy from the last group. It's always good to hear from a former Army buddy, it brings back fond memories. Not that all my memories of the military are fond but this time it was. Still, it does make a guy feel a little old when you can look back twenty years and realize you were already out there in the grown up world.

I'll just have to dye the gray out of my hair tomorrow, find a young girlfriend and go buy a convertible.

Fuck that. I'm looking forward to being an old codger.

Feingold In 2008

It is beginning to look like my candidate for president in 2008 will be Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold. My reasons for supporting Senator Feingold are quite simple, he is a humble and hard working member of the United States Senate who has made genuine efforts to represent his constituents and stand up for issues that he believes in. In addition, he has experience in foreign relations and intelligence having served on both of those committees in the senate.

And let us not forget that he has also been successful in bi-partisan affairs unlike some other Democratic presidential contenders who have a history of combative behavior with their Republican counterparts. And in keeping with his pledge to serve the people, Senator Feingold was the lone senator to cast a vote against the USA Patriot Act.

It has been said that the Democrats have no candidates who will be able to lead this country but I disagree. I believe that Senator Russ Feingold has the experience and leadership ability to lead this country out of the mess that George W. has created. Interesting though, Feingold/Clinton in 2008?

PlayStation 3 Hit With Setbacks

Console gaming fans will be waiting a little longer than expected before putting their hands on the long anticipated PlayStation 3 gaming console. The alleged reason for this delay has something to do with Sony finalizing the Blu-ray disk technology but I am skeptical. After all, if Sony is one of the developers of Blu-ray then why do they need to make a final decision as to whether or not to use it in the PlayStation 3? Unless they are not being forthcoming and perhaps their version of the new DVD format is flawed in some way.

That would be a devastating blow to Sony and although it would not destroy the company as a whole it would most definitely deal a major and long term setback to the financial future of the company. And as it stands this current delay in launching PlayStation 3 only allows Microsoft's Xbox 360 to gain a larger following and share of the gaming market.

Will Blu-ray technology become another Betamax fiasco? For those of you too young to remember, back when videotape ruled the world there was VHS and Beta. Sony had a superior format called Betamax but it made the strategic error of attempting to force the industry to use it's proprietary technology which allowed the inferior quality VHS format to become dominant because JVC allowed open sharing of it's technology.

But I digress. Sony claims that the PlayStation 3 will premier in November, so let's see how this plays out and more importantly which DVD technology will be driving their newest console.

It is a sad state of affairs in this country when parents who have already been traumatized by the loss of a child have to go through the added pain of not only burying their child but then having to have the body exhumed in an attempt to see that justice is served. I am talking about the case of 14 year old Martin Lee Anderson who died after a beating at the hands of guards at a youth boot camp for juvenile offenders in Florida. Even though the beating was caught on tape, the initial cause of death was ruled to have been due to a pre-existing blood disorder and no arrests were ever made in this case.

The State of Florida like most other jurisdictions in this country were all to eager to make this an open and shut case, forget about justice. In this case they wanted justice to turn a blind eye to the facts. But the family has not been deterred in their quest for the truth. They are fighting to bring the light of truth to the situation which resulted in the death of their son. The local district attorney, now having to save face, is going to be investigating further. Had the wheels of justice been turning to begin with, a proper investigation would have been done and the guilty punished and the family of Martin Lee Anderson, would still be in pain but they'd at least be on the road to recovering from this tragedy instead of having to revisit it all over again.

And what heinous crime did Martin Lee Anderson commit that resulted in his being sent to boot camp in order to receive a fatal beating at the hands of these savage guards? He had stolen his grandmother's car and had violated his probation. So it all makes perfect sense. In America it is not about redemption and rehabilitation it is about punishing someone just for the sake of punishment. And for Martin Lee Anderson his final punishment was a senseless death at a young age.

Isaac Hayes Stands Up For Scientology

Sorry folks, the voice of beloved South Park character Chef, Isaac Hayes, has called it quits. It seems that Mr. Hayes can no longer tolerate the disrespect that South Park shows towards religion. Or rather, he has been ordered by his masters in the Church of Scientology to disavow South Park because the show took aim at Scientology in a top-rated show last season.

It seems incredibly odd that South Park has mocked every major religion but it wasn't until the Church of Scientology was targeted that Mr. Hayes decided to speak up. So now the time has come for Isaac Hayes to step up and take his place as a lap dog for the puppet masters who pull the strings within the Church of Scientology.

Isaac, your star faded long ago and South Park was allowing you at least some semblance of a career but now you'll quickly fade from memory. It was nice knowing you. Isaac who?

I want to thank all of my visitors from Concordia University in Portland. I seem to draw a lot of traffic from your school and I don't want you folks thinking I haven't noticed your support and dedication to Mr. Viddy and Le Petite Morte.

And for those of you considering a local university, why not look into enrolling at Concordia University. They offer many fine programs from their three colleges: College of Theology, Arts & Sciences; College of Education; School of Management. Not to mention that the average class size is just 20 students and they boast a student to faculty ratio of 16 to 1. Not too shabby.

In a previous post I had made a reference to Teddy K. finding employment at Trader Joe's after he is voted out of office in November. That was a statement made purely in jest so all you Teddy K. fans can stop hissing and retract your claws.

The good governor has put in over 30 years of public service so I think that the next logical step in his career should be to slow down a bit and take it easy for once. I think he would make one hell of a greeter for Wal-Mart. It would be a low key position but still put him in touch with the people of Oregon on a daily basis. And with a former governor on the payroll, Wal-Mart would be more likely to straighten up it's act.

Just a thought.

Aerosmith's Mystery Illness Solved

It seems that the band Aerosmith has been canceling some tour dates due to a mystery ailment that has been plaguing front man Steven Tyler. Spokespeople for the band have not alluded to what this illness may be and no member of the band itself have come forward so it has left a lot of fans wondering what is going on.

I am not a medical professional but I believe that I have diagnosed this mystery illness. Old age. At 58, Steven Tyler is downright juvenile when compared to Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts but nonetheless the man is aging, badly. And even though old age is not considered an illness by the medical profession it can be fatal to an aging rocker. And it sounds better and garners more sympathy to say that one is suffering from a "mysterious ailment" rather than saying, "Aerosmith cannot perform tonight because Steven Tyler needs a nap and his arthritis is acting up."

Aerosmith, I dig you guys. Toys In The Attic rocked, but if you can no longer handle the rigors of touring then just get off the road and stick to doing studio albums.

John McCain vs. Hilary Clinton

Oregon's own elections are being held in November but the big show comes in 2008 when the donkeys and the elephants square off to see who will be next in line to destroy this country or perhaps raise a sunk ship. It's not too early to say that all eyes are going to be on Senator John McCain from Arizona and Senator Hilary Clinton from New York. It will be another presidential election just perfect for the media. You know that they are already researching some headline grabbing dirt on both of these potential candidates.

Another thing that John McCain has going for him is name recognition and I don't mean his own. His name bears a striking similarity to the character that Bruce Willis played in the Die Hard movies, and that is John McClane. Think about it. Detective John McClane has first hand experience in dealing with and defeating terrorists and he does it with a bit of humor even. With Senator McCain running the country under the guise of Detective McClane we could finally get a grip on this war on terror.

Hilary Clinton doesn't have an existing movie character with a similar name but I have always envisioned her as a more mature Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods from the Legally Blonde movies. Elle Woods was on path to become what Hilary Clinton already is, a savvy political monster and by embracing the character of Elle, Hilary could soften up her image a bit and gain some new supporters across the country.

So there you have it. My look into the possible lineup for the 2008 Presidential elections.

Bikes On MAX

Over on BikePortland.org they had a post regarding bikes on MAX trains. Now I love their site so I didn't want to post my true feelings about the subject on their site and cause a bunch of arguments but this is my house over here and I wanted to give you my views on the subject.

First off, MAX is public transportation and not anyone's personal people mover so when bringing a bike on board it is your sole responsibility to keep an eye on it. Not mine or another rider, you. I'm really sorry if your attention span is too narrow or you can't handle riding the MAX without falling asleep or needing to read a book. When I have hooked my bike up on the train I have always stayed right next to it. Another thing, the bike hangers are pretty stable in most situation but I have been on board MAX and seen bikes sway and hit another rider or even fall off the hook onto somebody else so that is why you need to be next to your bike.

As for locking your bike on MAX. Why? As mentioned above, you should have your eyes on the bike and not let yourself get distracted. This is as bad as the people with young children who get on and then fail to supervise their kids. I remember seeing one young child step off the MAX at the wrong stop and almost get left behind because the tweaky mother was to spun out to realize it.

But back to bikes on MAX. Take some personal responsibility and stop being so goddamn lazy and watch your bike and any other piece of personal property you lazy bastards.

The Filthy Rich Beggars: A Tale of Woe?

What is the deal with filthy rich people and their inability to pay their bills? I'm just a working class stiff but somehow on my meager salary I manage to get my bills paid and put food on the table. But just recently I've seen the news regarding Michael Jackson, who has somehow failed to keep up on paying his Neverland Ranch employees and of course here in Portland we have that janky ass Paul Allen crying about not being able to maintain the Blazers.

Okay, maybe in Jacko's case we can understand, the poor guy probably is a little strapped for cash due to his legal battles and having to pay hush money to little boys. But give me a break, I'm sure he has plenty of assets hidden away that he could tap into in order to pay the bills. Little Paulie is another thing altogether. He is the sixth richest man in the world. I never want to hear him complain or make excuses for needing financial assistance from anyone. I'm tired of you, Paul Allen, please move or sell the team and get the hell out of town. Go tell your sob stories to someone who cares.

You people are filthy rich slobs, so pay your bills and be responsible like the rest of us.

Is There A Future For Light Rail and Public Transportation In Albuquerque?

I think that in order for the Albuquerque metro area to ever succeed in having a proper mass transit system they will need to recruit and hire individuals who truly possess a vision for the future. The biggest mistake that is being made at the moment is the planners are not taking into account just who will use and benefit from a light rail system. And those people are the general public.

You can forget about the fantasy creating a transit system catering to business people, there are just not enough of them who will use public transportation to be able to sustain the system. What you need is a well designed series of routes and schedules that will enable the general public to get to and from work, shopping, school and events in a convenient and timely fashion. You will need a system that will allow the general public access to these places 7 days a week and make sure that the busses and trains don't stop running at 6 or 7pm.

You need to stop and realize that not everyone works 9 to 5 in the downtown area. People work, live and play spread out across the metro area and if you want to get people out of their cars and into public transportation then the biggest incentive is convenience. The politicians and planners need to come up with a real plan to present to the public and be able to show them that they are willing to commit the proper resources to such a project. Not just a pretty website or pictures of trains but actual timelines showing where the routes will be, what times they will run and most of all let the public know that the entire system will be under constant review so that it can be modified according to usage and future growth of the area.

Right now I am living in the Portland metro area in Oregon and we have one of the finest public transit systems in the country. Yes, I own a vehicle but I rarely drive because I know that I am able to get to just about any place I need to in the entire area because we have well planned bus and light rail routes. I will be relocating to Albuquerque at the end of the month and I will really miss Tri-Met and I definitely dread having to live in an area that will force me to drive out of necessity. Albuquerque is such a beautiful city and I will not regret my decision to move there but I am truly hoping that they wake up soon and put together a group of people who will be able to develop a solid plan for introducing a top notch public transit system into the metro area.
