"Bloody" Mary Winkler: Minister's Wife Gone Bad

There is a lot of speculation going around as to what motivated 32 year-old Mary Winkler to gun down her husband, minister Matthew Winkler in their Tennessee home on Wednesday. Police are keeping mum even though we have heard reports that "Bloody" Mary has given a full confession.

Friends and family have all described the couple and their children as being very happy together and everyone was shocked by the brutal killing, more so because it appears that the children were at home when their father was killed. No motive has been ruled out even though police have said that it does not appear to be a case of infidelity. Perhaps it was some form of abuse that nobody was aware of? At first I thought it was odd that no word of Mary's confession has leaked but then I realized that this being a conservative Southern community, they would do their best to keep a tight lid on news or gossip.

So what would cause a wife to murder her husband when everyone around them saw the couple as idyllic? Even though infidelity is being ruled out I believe that it was a possibility that Mary, acting under the influence of a possible lover, killed her husband in order to escape the seemingly perfect world that she was trapped in. And the other strong possibility may end up being some form of sexual abuse that was being perpetrated by the minister husband.

For now we must wait for this case to make it's way through the legal system before we truly find out what compelled "Bloody" Mary Winkler to kill, in cold blood.

Well that's quite a case. I'll bet infidelity WAS involved. Did the police volunteer that note, or was their response to a question of possible infidelity?

I always like dark stories of the seemingly perfect. Like when the good boy athlete turns out gay, or the perfect wife brutally murders her perfect husband.

Thanks for stopping by.

The local cops are keeping things under wraps, but I suspect that this is going to be blown wide open soon.

We're talking about the Church of Christ.

• Secretive and cult-like

• Almost as male dominated as the Mormons

• Focused on presenting a good image because it loses so many members each year that it is barely able to maintain its membership, not to mention grow.

• Splintered. Members have left to form other CofCs that are both less rigid and more rigid.

I believe that a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage to a CofC preacher might well lose her mind enough to become violent.

Another interesting aspect is that Winkler left a congregation last year. I'm wondering why.

I did not know that about the CoC but I will definitely research them some more.

I'm a C of C preacher's son. I never thought of us as secretive. Most everything else you folks have said about the C of C is correct. I live in Knoxville where Mary Winkler grew up and know people who knew her family. Her mom died in 1999. Mat Winkler's grandfather is well known in our denomination and a book in honor of him is touted on the Abilene Christian University home page. I have an emotional investment in this, therefore, and do not want to think that either Matt or Mary were up to no good. Maybe she just cracked. On the other hand, that is my sheltered, goody-goody side coming out. Reality is more messy than that, unfortunately.

Unless something comes straight out of left field in the coming weeks, I do not believe that the Church of Christ had any involvement in the brutal murder of Matthew Winkler. The full responsibility must be placed on "Bloody" Mary and I cannot think of too many scenerios in which this vicious woman would be justified in killing.

There is alot of judging going on here. First of all, no one but Mary and God knows what happened in that house that morning. Secondly, she has given a motive that is being kept under wraps for the time being. I think people need to stop and think how they would feel if someone they loved were in prison for killing someone that they loved....and they get on the net and find people referring to them as "Bloody". If Mary were a serial killer then I could understand the use of that word...but not in this case. What Mary needs is love and forgiveness....and the benefit of the doubt. I do not know Mary...nor did I know her husband...but something went terribly wrong inside that parsonage and Mary just couldn't take it any longer. Eventually it will all come out...but in the mean time....let's not resort to monikers that destroy a person and that destroy the hearts and minds of innocent people....like the Winkler children and the family of Mary Winkler who are suffering in this more than any of us can know.

As usual the man is to blame. Every time a woman murders, IT'S NOT HER FAULT. The husband abused her, she's crazy, she's depressed. She's just plain fucked up. She is a MURDERER. No excuses. Life in prison.

You all are crazy. I personally know the Winkler family and Matthew had to have provoked something as was his personality. He had the last word all the time. Atleast that was the impression he left me after babysitting his children while they were living in Nashville. She only did what she thought was right at the time to protect herself and her children.

I do not believe, that Matthew provoked, his own death. Quite honestly, I think, it has alot to do with her miscarraige, and what she was missing, in her life. Not with what she had.

The bottom line is that there is no exuse for her actions. Whether you are religious or not, any decent person should know that there are other options besides murder.

I just happened on this site. In response to J. As a member of the church of Christ, I challenge you to find anything that a true church of Christ does that we cannot find authorization for in the Bible.

Do men assume the leadership roles in our worship? Yes. You will find that the congregations who have split have been because someone has decided that they can do thing's "their" way and not according to the Holy Scripture.

Are we "politically correct"? No, we aren't. We speak where the Bible speaks, and are silent where the Bible is silent. Doing what's right and what's popular can make you unpopular.

Instead of just voicing your opinion, or what you heard on TV when they interviewed a Baptist preacher(?!?)to find out about the church of Christ, I suggest you find a copy of Where the Saints Meet and find a congregation that you can visit and find out for yourself, or pick up a Bible and start reading.

By the way, I am female. I am not oppressed, nor are any of the women I know "oppressed". We have our families, we have our careers, we teach our children.

And, while some leave for a demonination, I know several people in denominations who constantly change religions or quit religion altogether, which does not make us exclusive.

I encourage you to study for yourself, and not just write editorials.
